July 8th sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge on Prince of Wales island in Craig Alaska began with flat calm water, and overcast skies. We went to the outside of Noyes Island to where we fished the last couple of days and fishing there had slowed down quite a bit but were successful in landing one King salmon per boat and sat there from 6:30 am to 9 am or so then went bottom fishing landing a fair number of nice halibut having to again cut loose 2 in the 55″ range since 2012 regulation is for a 58″ or larger to retain the trophy halibut. It is quite a feat trying to measure a large halibut using my special made measuring stick as the halibut is not always very cooperative with this effort as the ocean swell and the movement of the fish makes it very difficult. You have to use a little “Kentucky Windage” almost but in doing make darn sure that the fish is well above the length of the stick before committing to killing it since once you do you had better be right. So we ended the halibut expedition with a nice catch including a nice Ling cod which limited out our guests as they needed one more to finish up there quota of one lingcod under 45″ each.
King salmon was again next on our agenda as we headed back to Pinnapple rock to try our luck and withing a few minutes landed the two kings we doubled up on which put us up to 3 kings and still shy of the 6 we needed to tag out since we had a resident on board that could catch 3 himself. We moved on to a new spot and were readily catching Coho salmon pretty regularly and then finished up with our Kings as well. Joel came in behind us after he had landed a nice catch of Halibut and also landed 15 silvers and a total of 3 out of 4 King salmon for the day.
