Alaska Salmon and Halibut fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska, August 22nd, 2012. The next three days is the last days of our fishing at King fisher lodge and we have just 2 guests Brian and his son Mason who did very well today landing 12 nice Silver salmon and 2 nice Halibut limiting them on the most sought after species. I will be gone by the time they return from fishing today to continue the report as I will be up to Fairbanks and off to the the Alaska Range hunting for Dall Sheep with my brother Frank, then on to Moose on the 1st of September with Jeanette which is her time to tag a moose, and will give a report of our hunting success when I return.

Alaska Salmon and Halibut fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska, August 18th, 2012. The 18th of August turned out to be another great day as the Silver salmon fishing remained strong with boats limiting throughout the day. Kingfisher lodge boats limited on Silver salmon and Halibut by the end of the day.

The 19th of August was good in the morning and then tapered off at which time we went bottom or Halibut fishing then in the afternoon finished the day strong limiting on our Silver salmon and heading home putting in a long day to get our 72 Coho’s.

August 20th started slower than the previous day but landed 22 coho’s and 18 Coho’s by 11:30 then off to get our Halibut hoping to get a barn door but not succeeding at that but landing some respectable 40 pound Butts. After the Halibut fishing back to our afternoon spot and quickly landed the remaining fish to tag out our Coho’s at 72 but again putting in a long day and thus ended a 3 day trip for a bunch of roofers and suppliers from the Northwest and Southwest. Good job guys and thanks for coming.

Alaska Salmon and Halibut fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska, August 12th, 2012. Today we went Halibut fishing in the afternoon and did not salmon fish although reports were that fishing for Coho salmon has remained good. The goal today was to bring our daughters out to procure our white fish for the winter months and so I decided to bring them to a spot that I have let many fish go that I could not keep on a charter with the 45″ to 68″ slot size. We were not disappointed when once arriving we landed a nice Ling cod, then 2 nice 80 pound butts, another large Ling cod, and one very large halibut we let go for a couple of reasons, one being that the larger fish are females with many eggs and the other is they are tougher and the flesh is dryer and not as desirable at the table.

Salmon & halibut fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska, August 8th, & 9th, & 10th, 2012.

August 8th was a great day to be an angler here in the Craig area as the silver salmon and halibut fishing has been very good with all boats limiting very early in the day and even the most novice angler can be assured of hooking the silver acrobats and enjoying their day out on the water.

August 9th seemed like the fish took a bit of a day off although most boats limited on their salmon they had to work harder that the previous day. So many times our guys came up with bare hooks as the frustration grew trying to finish our limits took some time although still remained a very good day of fishing as anytime you can catch your limit of 6 silver salmon a day is good fishing…we just get spoiled expecting the fish to always be biting well for us. Halibut fishing was again strong and landing very nice regulation size fish.

August 10th was a good day for us as we had 21 Coho’s by 8:30 a.m. then halibut fishing went well and once we finished on the Halibut we went back for the salmon which proved well for us in the afternoon. The fish are very nice sized with the largest weighing in at over 14 pounds and fighting like King salmon. The largest halibut of the day was over 64″ but under the 68″ required and that was landed by Marc Brown who reluctantly had to say goodby as we let the beauty go and watch it swim away, nice job though Marc. Overall for the 3 days fishing both groups did very well stocking their freezers for their winter supply of fish.

Alaska Salmon and Halibut fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska, August 5th, & 6th, 2012. Silver salmon fishing remained strong again these two days as limits by all boats in the Craig area landing limits by early morning and some boats landing King salmon. Both our boats landed a king or two each day along with the limits of silver salmon. Largest King for the 3 days was a 31 pounder caught by Clark Fidler on the 6th and the largest Halibut by Jim Gonzolas at 73″ or over 210 pounds.

Alaska Salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska, August 4th, 2012 was another great day for salmon fishing and mooching as the Coho runs remain strong on the outside and inside waters around the Craig area. Boats around Noyes island were all limiting on Silver salmon early in the day and some landing King salmon. The ocean was settling down with no wind on the water but still built up a bit from the previous days wind and large tides. The Jeanette Elaine fished inside Noyes island limiting on our coho by 10 am but the Trinity limited on silvers in record time including a nice 23 pound King salmon caught by Ray Stevenson and they limited by 9 am or so within an hour after arriving to the rock pile.

Halibut fishing is also remaining strong as the groups on both boats landed nice halibut with Phil Soulen landed a nice 69″ butt and the rest of the group landing nice size butts as shown by the group photo above. There were at least 5 over-under sized fish that were in the 75-100 pound range that had to be released. The remaining halibut were ranging from 45″ down to 38″.

Alaska Salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska August 2nd 2012 on Prince of Wales island. This morning we woke to 10 mph winds and overcast skies with light rain. We went straight out to Noyes island where we started fishing for salmon spending 3 hours getting limits of Silver salmon while Joel and the crew on the Trinity went out to the Rock Pile hoping to get some more King salmon, which they did as Tom Giblock of Gilette Wyoming hooked a 4o pound King which took him close to a half hour to land. Once they had the King in the boat they continued fishing at the rock pile, but landing only a few silvers decided to get their halibut and then move to inside waters to look for more salmon.

While we were out catching our halibut they went into St. Joe island and landed their limits of Silver salmon and one more King salmon getting in on a wide open Silver bite. It appears that the Silver salmon runs are remaining steady and we only hope that the run continues to remain strong for the next couple of weeks.

Alaska Salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska and Prince of Wales island for July 31st and August 1st. July 31st the weather was predicted to blow up to 30 knots and seas building to 8 feet and the weather man is always right when he predicts wind and rain it seems. We got our limits of Silver salmon and Halibut yesterday but had to pound our way back to the lodge at a modest speed of 15 knots or so and we were all soaking wet due to the torrential rain and pretty beat up by the time we tied the boats to the dock, not pictures as everyone headed for hot showers and stiff drinks!

August 1st we woke to the flags draped around the flag pole and not a ripple on the water or any rain. We went straight to St. Joseph island and picked away at our Silver salmon which by 9:30 or so had close to our limits of those and went out to land our Halibut. Joni Pahor landed a nice 100 pound halibut but had to let it go since it was under the 68″ required by the IPHC. We landed 2 nice 44″ “Butts” though and then one smaller one as well as a nice 38″ Ling cod. From there we headed up to the Rock Pile to try our luck at King salmon and were rewarded with one nice 23 pound King caught by Don Pahor. Joel’s boat landed 4 nice King salmon and limits of Silver salmon, one nice halibut they had to release and 4 nice 40 pounders to finish the day including some nice yellow eye. Lyle Randon had said he was waiting for a nice King salmon and true to his word landed a nice one topping off his day.

Alaska Salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 28th, and the 29th of 2012.The last couple of days the fishing around Noyes island has been very good on the outside waters of the island at the “rockpile” and “Pineapple” as all boats limiting on Silver salmon quite early with a smattering of King salmon being caught as well with some King salmon in the 50 pound and larger size. We have been fishing some other spots keeping from the crowds and landing limits of Coho or Silver salmon and a King salmon here and there. Silver salmon fishing remains strong in the Craig area as the fish are moving into the local waters of Craig and you see many boats fishing the local areas near town as well as large amounts of boats on the outer coast. Halibut fishing has also remained strong and nice slot limit size halibut (45″) seem quite abundant as we catch our limit without much effort so we are hoping that the stocks are rebuilding and will remain strong and continue to build with the present limits in place.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska, July 27th 2012

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska, July 27th 2012 started out again with flat calm water but no fog. We went to Hole in the Wall where we had been doing quite well, but today the fishing dropped off and landed 12 Coho’s in a short time and then went down to watching the wildlife but no fish. We decided to go halibut fishing and landed our 6 halibut in one hour and then went off to where Joel had found large amounts of Coho salmon and after he left with his limit we finally started landing the wiley Coho and within a few hours finished with our limit and 2 King salmon. Joel had landed his limit and one King salmon. The total today was 72 silver salmon 3 King salmon, 12 Halibut, and one Ling cod. At the end of the day we ended up with a 52 pound King salmon after it was gutted and the picture shows Mathew Cannon with this beautiful fish but will leave it to Mathew to finish the story.
